Can’t Hurt Me: Initial Thoughts + Challenge #1

Challenge #1 is all about barriers: What’s standing in your way?

I recently discovered the world of David Goggins. I’d always admired this incredible Navy SEAL, endurance athlete, and all-around BAMF. His motivational style has always resonated with me. If I had to sum it up, his philosophy is pretty simple: no excuses, you control your destiny, and don’t be a victim. LOVE. IT.

Earlier this week, when I was browsing Prime Day deals, I finally pulled the trigger and ordered Goggins’ book. Can’t Hurt Me is part autobiographical, part self-help (NOTE: I’ve always responded well to tough love - his style is not for the faint of heart. But you can order a “clean” copy of his book if you’re not a fan of profanity). After putting the kids to bed last night I read the first 75 pages. WOW. His story feels so unreal. It’s so heartbreaking, yet simultaneously inspiring. Feels like the halftime locker room speech WE ALL need. Especially right now.

The book presents ten separate challenges to help readers harness the power of Goggins’ badass principles. The first challenge was all about obstacles. What stands in your way? What is keeping you from greatness? From reaching your dreams?

For Challenge #1, I organized my thoughts in categories: Running, Career, and Mom Life. Each list looked different, but each category had significant overlap. Here are the barriers that were listed on all three categories:

  • Time

  • Fear of Failure

  • Focus

Guess what? These barriers are all under my control. Even “time.” Sure, there are only so many hours in the day. And as a mom juggling career, running aspirations, and two kids under 4, there seem to be less hours each day. But with a little planning, preparation, and caffeine, I can do more. I can push myself and be more diligent with my time and focus.

My running goals have been pretty focused lately (see last week’s post on my new goals for 2020-2021). But career and mom life goals have been a moving target for a while now. I’m looking forward to narrowing down my goals in these two areas. Both are a work in progress…more updates to come!
